THE CASSIODORUS FLAVOURS ROAD
The Cassiodorus Flavours Road winds through the Gulf of Squillace, between farms and wild plants, all to be discovered, for lovers of food-and-wine vacations in Calabria. Olive groves, orchards, wild herbs: everything that serves to flavour the typical local cuisine comes from here. From this road, the scent of oregano and the overwhelming taste of the capers that accompany the real gem of the area, the organic oil. And we also have to mention asparagus and wild fennel, whose spring leaves are used to season the first course meals.
All these products are currently protected by the Strada dei Sapori Cassiodorei Association, with the wine-and-food itinerary that mainly regards the localities of San Floro, Girifalco and Staletti. The Roads of Flavours, in Calabria, are in all 1, and safeguard, in a certain sense, all the excellencies of the region. From the pecorino cheese to the soppressata salami, from wine to dried figs, from the 'nduja spreadable salami to chilli pepper.
FARMS AND WINE SHOPS
Here are some farms worth visiting: the best of all is the Bova Farm, in Amaroni, which since the 1980s has been a forerunner of the organic production of extra virgin olive oil. In Soverato, in the southern part of the Gulf of Squillace, you must visit the Migliarese oil mill, where you can see first-hand the whole process of oil processing and you can visit the fruit and vegetable plantations. In Catanzaro Lido, there is the La Cascina wine shop for wine lovers, while in the city, you should make a stop at the D'Errico Chocolatery.
STARRED RESTAURANTS
Lovers of starred cuisine will meet their match. Close to us, in Catanzaro, restaurant Antonio Abbruzzino has one star, while in the province of Crotone, they are Dattilo, in Strongoli, and Pietramare, on the Capo Rizzuto Island. Last but not least, there is Gambero Rosso in Marina di Gioiosa, in the province of Reggio Calabria.
